WHAT DOES A CLERK (INITIAL ASSISTANCE REPRESENTATIVE) DO? As a Clerk (Initial Assistance Representative), you will serve as the first point of contact for all customers coming into the Field Assistance walk-in site. You will work with taxpayers and tax practitioners needing tax assistance, as well as, a variety of other individuals including higher-level management from Headquarters, IRS officials, news media and individuals who need to be directed to other offices. In this role, you will be responsible for assessing/determining the taxpayer needs and then directing them to the appropriate individual or area. You will also work to control the walk-in area traffic flow and demands. As an Initial Assistance Representative Clerk you will:
Provide assistance by assessing taxpayer needs and directing them to the appropriate individual. Analyze and suggest resolution to reduce barriers impacting the effectiveness of operations and improve efficiency of the work area. Assist taxpayers with inquiries on basic tax law, forms, and IRS services such as W-2, W-7, obtaining an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number, filing requirements, filing status, and VITA locations. Examine returns, supporting documents, and monetary receipts for completeness and discrepancies. Use word processing and other software to produce a variety of correspondence in proper format, with responsibility for procedural and grammatical accuracy, factual correctness, and adequacy of treatment. You must have 1 year of specialized experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-4 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience for this position includes:
basic knowledge of research capabilities using relevant system (i.e., IDRS) and other research sources, and IRS functions and procedures in order to make appropriate referrals and provide guidance; Knowledge of and the ability to apply basic tax law; Knowledge of regulations and procedures related to administrative activities; and skill using word processing and other software and automation devices.You may substitute education for specialized experience as follows:
A Bachelor's degree or four (4) years of education above high school in any field of study from an accredited college or university. For Grade 5:
You may qualify by a combination of experience and education. Options for qualifying based on a combination will be identified in the online questions.-The experience may have been gained in either the public or private sector or Volunteer Service. The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
