The position of Teacher Assistant/Tutor for Engineering/F.I.R.S.T. The Engineering/FTC Robotics Program is a specialized program provided by the Consortium for Pre-College Education in Greater Newark at the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) that introduces students to basic concepts of engineering and its applications. The daily activities include classroom instruction, laboratory activities, and field activities.
Program participants will perform experiments in robotics, physics, chemistry, biology, and computer programming. They will also participate in educational field trips, team building exercises and career, college, and health fairs. The program aims to improve critical thinking, problem solving, math and science skills, as well as an introduction to college majors and careers in the fields of engineering, technology, and science. Program participants also compete in the F.I.R.S.T. Tech Challenge (FTC) Robotics Competition which is an intermediate program that provides an affordable, accessible opportunity for all schools and organizations to participate in FIRST Robotics competitions. FTC is aimed at middle school and high school-aged youth. Teams create robots to compete in an annual challenge geared around real-world robotic problems in a fun and fast-paced game. Teams are not only judged on how their robots perform on the field, but in other ways such as:
teamwork and professionalism, the engineering process they followed, how they connect with their communities, and how they think outside the box. The Consortium currently has one FTC team, which the instructor will be responsible for instructing and managing.
Teacher Assistants/Tutors are important members of the academic team who advise the students of the program. They work collectively with program instructors to provide relevant assistance in academic classes per the grade level of the students that will ensure a progressively collegiate focus to their class schedules.
